System Operation

  • Start, shut down, and restart the computer
  • In Windows, use Windows Explorer; on the Macintosh, use the Finder
  • Use the CD drive
  • Use Help
  • Print documents

System Navigation

  • Identify and use important parts of the window (scroll bars, dialog boxes, buttons, and pull-down menus)
  • Open, close, minimize, maximize, size, and move windows
  • Use the mouse (to point, click, and drag)
  • Start several applications and switch between applications
  • Manage multiple windows

File Management

  • Create a folder
  • Manage documents and folders
  • Copy and move objects (copy files to a disk, copy a group of files)
  • Save and find documents and files downloaded from the Web
  • Delete files
  • Understand standard Open, Load, and Save As dialog boxes
  • Understand file type extensions and their meanings
  • Use Find to search for a file on the hard disk

Internet Operation

  • Establish an Internet connection
  • Understand Internet addressing, naming conventions, and hyperlinks (use URLs to navigate the World Wide Web)
  • Use a Web browser (including user search techniques and bookmarks)
  • Use e-mail
  • Download files from the Web into a folder on the hard disk
